Shabby chic, rustic interior décor and jewellery is very popular at the moment. But rather than buy from fast homeware/mass produced goods stores, there are lots of twine string projects you can create at home. Not only are these DIY craft projects fun, by using sustainably sourced twine string they are more ethical, environmentally friendly and cost effective too.

Today we explore 6 trendy and fun things you can create with twine string that anyone can do.

6 things you can create with twine - twine string art - macrame - DIY craft with twine

1. Twine string bracelets

Use colourful beads, buttons or found objects to create on-trend bracelets. Layer the bracelets for a fun effect and mix and match on different days.

Simply thread the object on the twine and knot on each side of the object. You can then tie the end for a cool bracelet. This Dharma Door thick hemp twine would be perfect for the task.

2. Braided twine placemat and coasters

Make bespoke, natural looking placemats and coasters that will wow guests.

The Better Homes and Gardens US site has a great You Tube video explaining how to do it but if you don’t have time to view, here is a summary for you:

You will need

  • Felt
  • Marker
  • Scissors
  • Rope twine
  • Hot glue gun
  • Glue sticks
  • Dinner plate

Instructions

  1. Trace around a dinner plate onto felt, using your marker and cut around the traced line, leaving a dinner plate round shape of felt.
  2. Hot glue the string in a coil around the felt, starting in the centre
  3. When you’ve finished coiling and hot-gluing, cut the end and fringes on the sides.

A thicker twine like coir string twine would be best for this. Biome has a lovely range handmade in Sri Lanka by Araliya Community Company, a woman’s co-operative. It is traded under fair trade conditions.

3. Christmas ornaments

It couldn’t be easier to make gorgeous rustic ornaments for the tree. You could even use these to decorate all year round. Simply wrap any bauble in twine and glue as you go.

Biome has handmade wooden baubles that look great on their own, but you could add your own touch by wrapping them with twine.  These wooden bauble decorations are Australian made from sustainable timber.

4. Gift wrap gift tags

When wrapping gifts, give it a shabby chic look by using brown paper wrapped in twine with a pop of colour in the middle. Biome has a range of coloured twine if you prefer to spruce it up, like this Shon Twine in dark green, which is made of natural jute by women in Bangladesh in the tradition of Bengali rope makers (sourced under fair trade conditions).
